Gyros Aristotelous for the giant 150kg gyros that Souvlakination made viral
You’ll never see us writing about viral food here or following viral food trends. Except, in this case, it was Souvlakination that made this long-standing gyradiko on Aristotelous go super-viral in late 2023 and which, in turn, helped make Souvlakination pop off too.
People across the world were fascinated by the ginormous size of the giant gyros, such that the 5 second video (below) of it spinning surpassed 30 MILLION views and 200,000 likes in just a few weeks.
More importantly, this gyradiko on Aristotelous, the street that runs through the heart of Thessaloniki from the church of Agiou Dimitriou down to Aristotelous square by the sea, has struck success and fame, not just for the video, but because of its central location and longevity.
We caught up with Mara afterwards in 2024, whose father opened Gyros Aristotelous in 1977, and passed on all of the big questions that arose from the video of the giant gyros: how much does each gyros weigh, do they really run out every day, and is the meat actually fresh?
You can find all of the answers in our interview with Mara at Gyros Aristotelous above.
