Psaras for fresh fish that you pick from the market yourself

If there is a better place for fish in the heart of Thessaloniki, we are yet to find it. The story of this family-run fishmonger-restaurant begins in 1928, with grandfather Zacharias, who - although he spelt fisherman correctly - left a legacy that has evolved into a trendy, contemporary spot in the heart of Athonos market, right by Aristotelous square in the centre of Thessaloniki.

You’ll have the opportunity to choose your meal from the fishmonger section, packed with the catches of the day. Your picks are then sent into the kitchen, and you make yourself comfortable while the magic happens.

What did we eat? Charcoal grilled fish, grilled octopus, fried calamari and red mullet, and the most perfect, airy, white tarama – as it should be, despite the pink mass-produced alternatives that have become the norm in recent decades. Plus obligatory salad and bread.
